THREE Wise Men…THIRTY Wise Sayings…ONE Savior, Who Is Christ the Lord!
Advent begins today. Christmas will come. But for the next thirty days, I want to prepare for His coming. I want to wait expectantly on Him. I want to reflect on the events leading up to His arrival on this earth. I want to be immersed in what it meant for God to come into His creation as a tiny baby knowing His coming meant suffering, rejection, and death…But coming anyway…Because of His great love for us…Because He knew it would be worth it all…Because HE was the only way that we could be saved, that we could be forever in fellowship with Him, that all creation would once again be as He created it to be, that once and for all, there would be PEACE on earth, good will to all people…forever.
I wonder when the star appeared. Before Christ came? At His conception? At His birth? Whenever it appeared, God used the time to prepare the hearts of the THREE (traditional) kings to worship Him. Three very wise men who recognized that the star was not a natural occurrence, but a super-natural act of God. I wonder why they followed the star. Did they know about the coming Messiah? Had they heard of Yahweh’s plan for a Savior? Had they read the scrolls of Isaiah? Were they expecting the King to have arrived?
In Proverbs 22 – 24, Solomon wrote thirty wise sayings to his sons, who would one day be ruling the people. Those wise sayings would be timeless in their truth, even today. Oh, that our leaders would pay attention and learn from the wisdom of Solomon! His sayings have been relevant throughout history and will continue through eternity because they based on God’s law from Wisdom Himself! Solomon references the coming Messiah, when he writes about the orphans, the widows, those who are marginalized and mistreated. “Their Redeemer is strong; He will plead their case…” (Proverbs 23:11) One Savior, One King, is coming. He will make all things right. He will restore justice. He will rule righteously.
I’m not sure what the THREE wise men knew about Yahweh or Torah or the prophecies of Isaiah when they left their country behind to follow the star, but they were wisdom seekers and they must have understood this, the final wise saying of the THIRTY wise sayings of King Solomon:
“Know that WISDOM is thus for your soul;
If you find it (HIM); then there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.”
The THREE wise kings followed persistently, patiently, hopefully…and they found HIM…
“Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God” (I Corinthians 12:24)
The ONE SAVIOR
who gave them a future and a hope!
